Practices for Life with God
-
Prayer is the meeting place of heaven and earth. It is the central activity of our lives where we abide in God. Through meditating, talking and listening, we are changed into His likeness, and we ask for his healing power to renew all creation. There are many ways to pray. We would like to provide you with a few prayers that you can use regularly and some practical ideas that will help you "pray without ceasing" (1 Thes 5:17).
-
As part of your regular rhythm of prayer and Scripture, we encourage you to combine the two through the ancient practice of Lectio Divina (“Divine Reading”). This form of meditation can be practiced with any passage of Scripture, though we often recommend beginning with the words of Jesus.
It’s simple:
Read the passage slowly several times, allowing the words to take root in your heart.
Meditate on any words or phrases that seem to stand out, asking God to reveal His heart to you.
Pray in response to the passage — expressing confession, thanksgiving, surrender, adoration, or whatever rises within you.
Rest quietly in God’s presence, acknowledging that He is with you and speaking to you. If you sense an impression, invitation, or practical response from God, consider writing it down.

The Sabbath is a weekly rhythm of rest that God originally gave to the Israelites, and we still recommend it today. We stop working in order to put our trust in God as our provider, to take delight in him, to avoid the exhaustion of the world, and even to spend extra time with the people we love. Thankfulness, peace and joy abound as we learn this simple practice.

A "Rule of Life" is one way that we choose to be intentional about spiritual formation. God is always calling us to "be conformed to the image of his Son" (Rom 8:29). We partner with his work in our hearts by regularly readying ourselves to encounter him and by responding to the leading of the Holy Spirit. This workbook will help you commit to a consistent routine of healthy practices where you will seek God, love your neighbor, and guard your heart.
